Can I stain my old concrete, or does it have to be new?
This is a big question and I get it all the time. Folks see those really nice stained concrete floors in magazines or online and they wonder if their old concrete slab, maybe one that is not so pretty right now, can get that same kind of treatment. The good news is that, yes, you absolutely can stain old concrete. You can even stain concrete that is very old.
The main thing is not how old the concrete is, it is the condition of the surface. If your concrete does not have a lot of heavy stuff on it like old glue, paint, oil, grease, or old sealers, you are usually in good shape. If water soaks into the concrete when you pour a little bit on it, then it is likely ready for staining after you clean it properly. If the water beads up on the surface, you will need to strip any old sealer first. We are talking about getting down to the bare, porous concrete so the stain can really get in there and react the way it should. Sometimes, especially with older garage floors in Evanston that have seen a lot of oil spills, this might mean some serious cleaning or even grinding. What is the real difference between acid stains and water-based stains?
This is where things can get a little bit confusing, but it is important to understand the difference because it changes how the final look is and how durable it will be.

You will typically see earth tones like browns, tans, terra cottas, and some blue-greens with acid stains in Evanston. The color is permanent because it is truly part of the concrete. - Water-Based Stains (Non-Reactive Stains): These are mixes of water, polymers, and pigments.
